Cubeb (Piper Cubeba) Fruit Liquid Tincture

Both are liquid extracts of the same Piper cubeba fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

No - several "peppers" in the genus Piper are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Cubeb is Piper cubeba (Java pepper, tailed pepper), recognizable by the little tail on each berry. Black pepper (which we sell as Peppercorn) is a different species, Piper nigrum; long pepper is Piper longum (pippali); and these are culinary and traditional relatives with their own characters. Kava is Piper methysticum: although it is in the same genus, it is a very different plant used quite differently, so do not confuse cubeb with kava. Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is not a pepper at all - it only shares the word - and the chili "peppers" are Capsicum, an unrelated genus. We label ours clearly as cubeb (Piper cubeba), the fruit, so it is not confused with black pepper, long pepper, kava or the others.

Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, as cubeb is best kept to modest amounts. Because cubeb carries specific cautions (kidneys and pregnancy), please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Please read this carefully. Cubeb is a traditional spice that is fine in ordinary culinary amounts, but a concentrated extract calls for real cautions. Kidneys: cubeb is rich in oxalates, so avoid it if you have kidney stones or a kidney condition. Pregnancy and nursing: cubeb contains trace amounts of natural cyanide compounds and has traditionally been avoided in pregnancy, so do NOT use it if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Stomach: larger or concentrated amounts can irritate the stomach, so keep to the suggested serving and avoid it if you have gastritis, ulcers or severe reflux. Liver: it is best avoided if you have a liver condition. Do not take large quantities, and do not use concentrated products or essential oils in children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
