DETOXALL Tincture
DETOXALL Tincture, Milk Thistle Seed, Turmeric Rhizome, Red Clover Flower, Neem Leaf, Oregon Grape Root, Chlorella, Buckthorn BarkDETOXALL Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of seven ingredients extracted together in equal parts: five herbs, a root and a freshwater alga. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for short courses only - it contains buckthorn bark, a laxative-type herb, and several ingredients with serious cautions, so please read the safety information below before use.
- Milk thistle, seed - Silybum marianum seed (Asteraceae)
- Turmeric, rhizome - Curcuma longa rhizome (Zingiberaceae)
- Red clover, flower - Trifolium pratense flower (Fabaceae)
- Neem, leaf - Azadirachta indica leaf (Meliaceae)
- Oregon grape, root - Mahonia aquifolium root (Berberidaceae) - contains berberine
- Chlorella - Chlorella vulgaris whole cells (a green freshwater alga)
- Alder buckthorn, bark - Frangula alnus aged bark (Rhamnaceae) - not sea buckthorn; laxative-type herb
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Milk thistle - the small, hard seeds of a tall purple-flowered Mediterranean thistle named for the white veins on its leaves.
- Turmeric - the dried golden rhizome of a ginger-family plant, the same spice used in curries; it tints the liquid deep yellow and can stain fabric.
- Red clover - the round pink-purple blossoms of the common pasture clover, rich in isoflavones (see the safety note).
- Neem - the bitter leaf of the neem tree of India, planted for shade in villages across South Asia; the leaf, not the seed oil, is used here.
- Oregon grape - the bright yellow root of a holly-leaved shrub of the Pacific Northwest, colored by the alkaloid berberine.
- Chlorella - a single-celled green alga grown in freshwater tanks, not a plant; it is a food-grade microalga.
- Alder buckthorn - the bark of a European hedgerow shrub, aged for a year before use as tradition requires; it is a laxative-type herb, which is why this blend is limited to short courses. Not related to sea buckthorn, the orange berry.
Why a tincture
The seven dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a strongly bitter, earthy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label, and drink plenty of water through the day. Use it for no more than ten days at a time. Do not exceed the label serving, and reduce or stop if you develop loose stools or cramping. Take it at least two hours apart from any medication (see the safety note). Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same seven-ingredient blend is available as DETOXALL Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains buckthorn bark (a laxative-type herb), neem and Oregon grape. It is for short courses only, and it is not for children or during pregnancy. Please read before use.
- Laxative effect: alder buckthorn bark stimulates the bowel. Use this blend for no more than ten days at a time - longer use can cause potassium loss, which is dangerous with digoxin and other heart medicines and with diuretics. Reduce or stop if you develop diarrhea or cramping. Do not use if you have an intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis or undiagnosed abdominal pain.
- Children: not for children - neem has caused serious poisoning in infants and young children.
- Pregnancy, conception and nursing: do not use - buckthorn, Oregon grape, neem, red clover and turmeric are all avoided in pregnancy, neem affects fertility, and berberine from Oregon grape can harm newborns.
- Blood thinners: red clover, turmeric and neem may increase bleeding, while chlorella is rich in vitamin K and can weaken warfarin. Do not use with any blood thinner without your doctor, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: red clover contains plant estrogens - avoid if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
- Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with concentrated turmeric. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual fatigue. Do not use if you have liver disease.
- Gallstones: avoid if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (turmeric).
- Blood sugar: neem and milk thistle may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Medication timing: take this blend at least two hours apart from other medicines.
- Allergies: milk thistle is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant; avoid chlorella if you are allergic to iodine or molds.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
