DETOXALL Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of seven ingredients extracted together in equal parts: five herbs, a root and a freshwater alga. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for short courses only - it contains buckthorn bark, a laxative-type herb, and several ingredients with serious cautions, so please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Milk thistle - the small, hard seeds of a tall purple-flowered Mediterranean thistle named for the white veins on its leaves.
  • Turmeric - the dried golden rhizome of a ginger-family plant, the same spice used in curries; it tints the liquid deep yellow and can stain fabric.
  • Red clover - the round pink-purple blossoms of the common pasture clover, rich in isoflavones (see the safety note).
  • Neem - the bitter leaf of the neem tree of India, planted for shade in villages across South Asia; the leaf, not the seed oil, is used here.
  • Oregon grape - the bright yellow root of a holly-leaved shrub of the Pacific Northwest, colored by the alkaloid berberine.
  • Chlorella - a single-celled green alga grown in freshwater tanks, not a plant; it is a food-grade microalga.
  • Alder buckthorn - the bark of a European hedgerow shrub, aged for a year before use as tradition requires; it is a laxative-type herb, which is why this blend is limited to short courses. Not related to sea buckthorn, the orange berry.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The seven dried ingredients are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the ingredients. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label, and drink plenty of water through the day. Use it for no more than ten days at a time. Do not exceed the label serving, and reduce or stop if you develop loose stools or cramping. Take it at least two hours apart from any medication (see the safety note). Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same seven-ingredient blend is available as DETOXALL Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains buckthorn bark (a laxative-type herb), neem and Oregon grape. It is for short courses only, and it is not for children or during pregnancy. Please read before use.

  • Laxative effect: alder buckthorn bark stimulates the bowel. Use this blend for no more than ten days at a time - longer use can cause potassium loss, which is dangerous with digoxin and other heart medicines and with diuretics. Reduce or stop if you develop diarrhea or cramping. Do not use if you have an intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis or undiagnosed abdominal pain.
  • Children: not for children - neem has caused serious poisoning in infants and young children.
  • Pregnancy, conception and nursing: do not use - buckthorn, Oregon grape, neem, red clover and turmeric are all avoided in pregnancy, neem affects fertility, and berberine from Oregon grape can harm newborns.
  • Blood thinners: red clover, turmeric and neem may increase bleeding, while chlorella is rich in vitamin K and can weaken warfarin. Do not use with any blood thinner without your doctor, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: red clover contains plant estrogens - avoid if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
  • Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with concentrated turmeric. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual fatigue. Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Gallstones: avoid if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (turmeric).
  • Blood sugar: neem and milk thistle may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Medication timing: take this blend at least two hours apart from other medicines.
  • Allergies: milk thistle is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant; avoid chlorella if you are allergic to iodine or molds.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is DETOXALL Alcohol-Free Drops?
DETOXALL is a seven-ingredient liquid blend: milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum), turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), red clover flower (Trifolium pratense), neem leaf (Azadirachta indica), Oregon grape root (Mahonia aquifolium), chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris, a freshwater alga) and alder buckthorn bark (Frangula alnus), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. All seven are also sold on their own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - because it contains buckthorn bark, this blend is for short courses only, and it is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same seven ingredients in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is the buckthorn in this blend sea buckthorn? Why is it a short-course blend?
No. The buckthorn here is alder buckthorn bark (Frangula alnus), the aged bark of a European shrub of the buckthorn family - a traditional laxative-type herb, which is why this blend is meant for short courses of no more than ten days. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is an unrelated orange berry that we sell separately; it is not in this blend. Neem is the leaf of the Indian neem tree, Oregon grape is the yellow root of a Pacific Northwest shrub, and chlorella is a single-celled green alga grown in freshwater tanks, not a plant.
