Frequently Asked Questions about Di Gu Pi Extract
What is Di Gu Pi / Lycium Root Bark (Lycium barbarum) extract?
Di Gu Pi is a liquid extract of the dried ROOT BARK of Lycium barbarum, the goji or wolfberry plant (family Solanaceae). In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Di Gu Pi, and in botanical/pharmacopeia terms it is Cortex Lycii (the bark of the root). It is important to understand that this is the root bark, NOT the goji berry: the goji berry is the fruit of the same plant, a different part with a different use, which we sell separately as Goji and Gou Qi Zi. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root-bark liquid extract, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced from China and each batch is gluten free. Please read the safety notes below, especially if you take blood-pressure or blood-sugar medication.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lycium barbarum root bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Di Gu Pi the same as goji berry?
No - and this is the most important point about this product. Di Gu Pi and goji berry come from the same plant, Lycium barbarum, but they are different parts of it and are used quite differently. Di Gu Pi is the ROOT BARK; the goji berry (also called wolfberry, or Gou Qi Zi in Chinese) is the sweet red FRUIT. The berry is the well-known food and superfood you see in stores; the root bark is a separate traditional herb with its own uses and its own cautions. We sell the berry separately under the names Goji and Gou Qi Zi. Because they share the plant name Lycium barbarum, we label this product clearly as the root bark (Di Gu Pi / Cortex Lycii) so it is not confused with the berry.
How do I use Di Gu Pi / Lycium root-bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below carefully before use, especially if you take medication for blood pressure or blood sugar. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Di Gu Pi right for everyone? Safety and storage.
In classical Chinese sources Di Gu Pi is described as "greatly cold" and non-toxic, and no toxicity has been reported for it at normal doses, so it is considered low in toxicity. A few cautions: because of its cold nature, overdoing it or using it for a long time may cause stomach discomfort, nausea or loose stools, so keep to the suggested serving. Di Gu Pi may lower blood pressure and blood sugar, so if you have high or low blood pressure or diabetes, or take medication for them, use caution and consult your healthcare practitioner, as the effects can add up. Do NOT use during pregnancy or nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
