Frequently Asked Questions about E Zhu Extract
What is Zedoary / E Zhu (Curcuma zedoaria) root extract?
Zedoary is a perennial plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), botanically Curcuma zedoaria, native to India and Southeast Asia and long cultivated in China. In English it is called zedoary or white turmeric; in Chinese herbal tradition it is known as E Zhu or Peng E Zhu, and elsewhere as kachur, temu putih, gajutsu or khamin khao. The part used is the dried rhizome, often called the root. Its cut surface is pale, which is where the name white turmeric comes from. The rhizome naturally contains an aromatic essential oil with constituents such as curcumol, curdione and beta-elemene - these are simply components of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced, wild harvested material. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Curcuma zedoaria root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is zedoary the same as turmeric, and is this curcumin?
No on both counts, and the distinctions matter. First the plant: several species of the genus Curcuma are sold as separate herbs, and we carry four of them. Ours here is Curcuma zedoaria, zedoary or white turmeric. Common yellow turmeric, the culinary spice, is Curcuma longa - a different species, sold under its own name. Yu Jin is Curcuma aromatica and mango ginger is Curcuma amada, again separate species with their own pages. They are relatives within one genus but are not interchangeable raw materials. Second the form: curcumin is a single isolated compound associated with Curcuma longa, and it is not what this product is; ours is a whole-root liquid extract of C. zedoaria, not an isolate and not a standardized single-compound preparation. Zedoary is also sold as a dried powder, whereas our product is a liquid you take by the drop. We label the botanical name (Curcuma zedoaria) and plant part (root) on every page so there is no confusion between the species or the forms.
How do I use Zedoary liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Zedoary extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Zedoary is not right for everyone, and there are real cautions here. Do not use it during pregnancy: in traditional practice this root is regarded as a strong blood-moving herb and has a long-standing reputation as an emmenagogue, so it is avoided in pregnancy. Avoid it while nursing as well. Because of that same traditional profile, use caution if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication such as warfarin, clopidogrel or aspirin, if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or if you have heavy menstrual bleeding - speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner first. Discontinue at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery. Taking more than the suggested serving may irritate the digestive tract. People sensitive to plants of the ginger family may also react to this root. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our E Zhu (Curcuma Zedoaria) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
