Frequently Asked Questions about Finger Lemon Extract
What is Finger Lemon / Buddha's Hand (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) fruit extract?
Finger lemon is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, better known as Buddha's Hand or fingered citron, and in Chinese as Fo Shou - a fragrant citron of the Rutaceae (citrus) family whose fruit splits into finger-like sections. Despite the trade name "finger lemon," it is a citron, not a lemon. It is prized mainly for its aromatic peel; unlike other citrus it has little or no pulp or juice. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: the proper botanical name is Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis (you may see the pharmacopeial fragment "Citri Sarcodactylis"), and this fruit is a citron - a different plant from the finger lime (Citrus australasica), the lemon, and the "Buddha fruit"/monk fruit (Momordica grosvenori); and like other citrus it contains natural bergapten, which carries mild sun-sensitivity and medication cautions, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis fruit; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Buddha's Hand the same as finger lime, lemon or monk fruit?
No - several names are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Buddha's Hand (our finger lemon) is Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, a citron - a citrus grown mainly for its fragrant fingered peel. It is not the finger lime, which is Citrus australasica, an Australian citrus with caviar-like pearls inside - a completely different fruit despite the similar name. It is also not the ordinary lemon (Citrus limon). And it should not be confused with the "Buddha fruit" or monk fruit, which is Luo Han Guo (Momordica grosvenori), a gourd-family plant used as a sweetener that we sell separately - the shared word "Buddha" is the only connection. We label ours clearly as finger lemon / Buddha's Hand (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) so you know exactly which fruit you have.
How do I use Finger Lemon liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder, citrusy taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because it is a citrus that contains bergapten, please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Finger Lemon right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Buddha's Hand is an edible citron with a very good safety record, but a few citrus cautions apply to a concentrated extract. Sun sensitivity and medications: like grapefruit and other citrus, it contains bergapten (a furanocoumarin), which can make the skin a little more sensitive to sunlight and can affect how the body processes some medicines (through a liver enzyme, CYP3A4) - be cautious with strong sun, and consult your practitioner before use if you take any medication. Skin and stomach: the peel and its oils can cause a rash in sensitive people, and large amounts of the rind can upset the stomach, so keep to the suggested serving. Allergy: it is a citrus, so avoid it if you are sensitive to citrus. Pregnancy and nursing: the fruit is a food, but for a concentrated extract consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
