Frequently Asked Questions about Gu Sui Bu Extract
What is Drynaria Rhizome (Gu Sui Bu) extract?
Drynaria extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried rhizome of Drynaria fortunei, also classified as Drynaria roosii, an epiphytic fern of the family Polypodiaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism the rhizome is known as Gu Sui Bu, and in pharmacy references as Rhizoma Drynariae. Our extract is made from the rhizome of the fern and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product such as naringin. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the medicinal Drynaria fortunei rhizome.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Drynaria fortunei rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
What does the name Gu Sui Bu mean, and is this the same as naringin or a houseplant fern?
The traditional Chinese name Gu Sui Bu translates roughly as mender of broken bones, and an old folk name for the plant reflects the same idea. We share this only because it is the plant's traditional name and etymology - it is not a statement about what the product does. Botanically, our product is the rhizome of Drynaria fortunei, a medicinal fern. It is different from naringin, a single flavonoid compound found in the rhizome (and also in grapefruit and other citrus) that is sometimes sold on its own; our extract preserves the plant's own spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating that one compound. It is also different from the ornamental Drynaria ferns, such as the basket fern and oakleaf fern (Drynaria quercifolia), which are grown as decorative houseplants rather than used as herbs. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Drynaria liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Drynaria extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
As with any herbal supplement, Drynaria is not appropriate for everyone. It should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing, and is generally not intended for long-term continuous use. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Gu Sui Bu (Drynaria Fortunei) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
