Frequently Asked Questions about Hyssop Extract
What is Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) herb extract?
Hyssop is an aromatic herb, botanically named Hyssopus officinalis, in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, it is a small semi-woody plant with narrow leaves and spikes of blue-purple flowers, and it has a warm, bittersweet, minty taste. For centuries it has been used as a culinary herb and as a flavoring in traditional herbal liqueurs such as Chartreuse, and it carries a long cultural and biblical history. Our extract is made from the dried aerial parts (the herb) and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Each batch is made from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound or an essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so it is not confused with other plants that share the name "hyssop."
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hyssopus officinalis herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as anise hyssop, hyssop oil, or the biblical hyssop?
Three clarifications are worth making. First, anise hyssop: that name refers to Agastache foeniculum, a different North American plant with a licorice-anise scent, grown as an ornamental and culinary herb. Our product is Hyssopus officinalis, the true hyssop of the Mediterranean - a different plant despite the shared word. Second, hyssop oil: hyssop essential oil is a concentrated aromatic oil used in aromatherapy and diluted for external use. Our product is different - it is an internal liquid extract of the herb, taken by the drop, not an essential oil. Third, the biblical hyssop: hyssop is mentioned in scripture, but scholars note that the plant referred to in ancient texts may have been a related Mediterranean herb such as Origanum syriacum rather than Hyssopus officinalis. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Hyssopus officinalis), plant part (herb) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion.
How do I use Hyssop liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Hyssop extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Hyssop is not appropriate for everyone. The plant naturally contains a compound called pinocamphone (most concentrated in hyssop essential oil), so as a general precaution hyssop is traditionally avoided by people with epilepsy or a seizure disorder, and it should not be used during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Hyssop (Hyssopus Officinalis) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
