Legs Relax Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together: the pungent root of valerian, the aromatic leaf of thyme, and quina - the bark of the Andean cinchona tree, the natural source of quinine. Each is also sold on its own. This is a traditional herbal product for adults only, with serious cautions - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae)
  • Thyme, leaf - Thymus vulgaris leaf (Lamiaceae)
  • Quina (cinchona), bark - Cinchona officinalis bark (Rubiaceae) - contains quinine and related alkaloids
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (valerian from the USA, thyme from Egypt, quina bark from Brazil). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Valerian root - the root of a tall meadow plant of Europe with clusters of pale pink flowers; the root has a strong, earthy smell that is unmistakable once known, and it has been gathered in European herbalism for centuries.
  • Thyme leaf - the small grey-green leaves of the low aromatic shrub of Mediterranean hillsides, the same plant as the kitchen herb.
  • Quina bark - also called Peruvian bark or Jesuit bark, the bark of a cinchona tree native to the Andes, historically famous as the source from which quinine was first isolated. The whole bark contains quinine and related alkaloids in small amounts, which is why this blend carries the cautions below. It is not the same as quinine tablets (a prescription medicine) or tonic water.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the very bitter, earthy note of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and do not use it for long periods without a practitioner. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Legs Relax Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - contains quinine-bearing cinchona bark - please read before use

This blend contains cinchona bark, the natural source of quinine, a prescription medicine with serious cautions. Adults only. Please read before use.

  • FDA quinine warning: the FDA warns that quinine taken for night-time leg cramps has caused serious and life-threatening blood reactions, including low platelets and kidney-related clotting disorders. This product is not for leg cramps or restless legs - see a doctor for those.
  • Stop and seek medical help if you notice ringing in the ears, headache, nausea, vision changes, unusual bruising or bleeding, dark urine, or an irregular heartbeat.

  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Legs Relax Alcohol-Free Drops?
Legs Relax is a three-herb liquid blend: valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), thyme leaf (Thymus vulgaris) and quina bark (Cinchona officinalis), extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Valerian is the tall, pink-flowered meadow plant of Europe whose pungent root has been used for centuries; thyme is the small aromatic shrub of Mediterranean hillsides; quina, or Peruvian bark, is the bark of the Andean cinchona tree, the natural source of quinine. Each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule, and it is for adults only. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend contains quinine-bearing bark, which has serious cautions, and it causes drowsiness.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the very bitter, earthy note of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Does Legs Relax contain quinine? Is it the same as tonic water or quinine tablets?
It contains quina, the whole bark of the cinchona tree, which naturally contains quinine and related alkaloids, so yes - a small amount of quinine is present in every serving. It is not the same as quinine sulfate tablets, which are a prescription medicine with a standardized dose and a boxed warning, and it is not tonic water, which contains a tiny regulated amount of quinine for flavor. Because the bark is quinine-bearing, the same cautions apply: read the safety note before use. Quina bark, valerian root and thyme leaf are also available as single extracts, and valerian is used in several of our other blends.
How do I use Legs Relax Drops?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and do not use it for long periods without a practitioner. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label. Keep out of reach of children.
