Gui Zhi, Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Cassia) is an evergreen tree native to southern China, Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam. The tree grows to 10-15 m tall, with greyish bark and hard elongated leaves that are 10-15 cm long and have a decidedly reddish color when young.*

What is Gui Zhi, Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomum cassia)?

Gui Zhi is the cinnamon twig - the young dried twig of the cassia cinnamon tree, Cinnamomum cassia, a plant of the family Lauraceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism the twig is called Gui Zhi; the pharmaceutical name is Ramulus Cinnamomi. The part used here is the dried twig, not the bark. Our raw material is cultivated in China. The extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-twig liquid extract carrying the twig's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. One thing worth knowing up front: the same tree also gives cinnamon bark, which is the familiar kitchen spice and a separate product - the twig and the bark are used differently. What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Cinnamomum cassia twig; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the twig's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.

Twig vs bark, cassia vs Ceylon, and the other "Cassia" plants - which is this?

This is the twig of cassia cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia - known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Gui Zhi. Because cinnamon and cassia are used loosely, a few clarifications. First, the part: this is the twig (Gui Zhi, Ramulus Cinnamomi), not the bark. Cinnamon bark - the kitchen spice, called Rou Gui in Chinese herbalism - comes from the same tree but is a different part and a separate product; if you want the spice, that is the bark, not this twig. Second, the species: ours is cassia cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia (also written Cinnamomum aromaticum); "true" or Ceylon cinnamon is a different species, Cinnamomum verum, and has a very different coumarin content (see the safety note). Third, a name that misleads: several unrelated plants in the pea family are also called "Cassia" - for example senna (Cassia angustifolia), Jue Ming Zi (Cassia obtusifolia), and others - and these are not cinnamon at all. Our product is specifically the cinnamon twig of the laurel-family tree Cinnamomum cassia. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.

How do I use Cinnamon Twig liquid extract?

Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.

Is Cinnamon Twig extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

A few sensible precautions. Cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) naturally contains coumarin, unlike Ceylon cinnamon, so it is best not taken in large amounts over long periods; if you have a liver condition or take blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, talk with your healthcare practitioner before use. Cinnamon may also influence blood sugar, so if you take medication for diabetes or blood sugar, consult your practitioner first. Do not use this product during pregnancy or while nursing unless directed by your practitioner. It is not intended for young children. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children.
