Helixpely Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of seven ingredients extracted together: a Middle Eastern spice seed, two roots of Chinese herbalism, an Indian kitchen seed, a European meadow flower, a North American tree bark and the golden rhizome of turmeric. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only with many cautions - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Black cumin seed - the tiny black seed of Nigella sativa, the kalonji of Middle Eastern and Indian breads; a different plant from true cumin.
  • Coptis root - the thin, bright yellow rhizome of Coptis chinensis (huang lian), one of the most bitter roots of Chinese herbalism; its color comes from berberine, the same alkaloid as goldenseal.
  • Chinese licorice root - Glycyrrhiza uralensis, the sweet root that appears in more Chinese formulas than any other herb; a close relative of European licorice with the same glycyrrhizin.
  • Fenugreek seed - the hard, yellow-brown seed of a legume of the Indian kitchen, with a maple-like scent.
  • Meadowsweet flower - the creamy, almond-scented flower heads of a tall plant of European wet meadows; the flower carries natural salicylates, the plant compounds from which aspirin was first derived.
  • Slippery elm bark - the mucilage-rich inner bark of a North American elm, listed as at-risk by United Plant Savers and sourced responsibly.
  • Turmeric rhizome - the bright orange rhizome of a ginger relative from South Asia.

Why a tincture

The seven dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, sweet-and-spicy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it at least one to two hours apart from medicines, because slippery elm can slow their absorption. Use for short periods only - licorice and berberine-containing herbs are traditionally taken for a few weeks at a time, not continuously. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same blend is available as Helixpely Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Adults only. This blend interacts with prescription medicines, blood thinners and blood-pressure medication, and is not for pregnancy. Please read before use.

  • Infections: a stomach infection such as Helicobacter pylori, or an ulcer, needs a doctor and prescribed treatment. This herbal product is not a treatment and must never replace it.
  • Prescription medicines: berberine in coptis blocks the liver enzymes that process many drugs (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) and can raise their levels; slippery elm slows the absorption of medicines. Ask your pharmacist before combining, and take medicines one to two hours apart.
  • Bleeding and surgery: black cumin, fenugreek, meadowsweet and turmeric can slow blood clotting. Do not combine with blood thinners or aspirin without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Blood pressure and potassium: licorice can raise blood pressure, lower potassium and cause fluid retention. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or take diuretics, digoxin or corticosteroids; do not use continuously for more than four to six weeks.
  • Blood sugar: black cumin and fenugreek can lower it. Use caution with diabetes medication.
  • Pregnancy, nursing and infants: do not use. Fenugreek and black cumin act on the uterus, licorice is unsafe in pregnancy, and berberine can cause jaundice in newborns.
  • Aspirin sensitivity and children: meadowsweet contains natural salicylates. Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin or have asthma triggered by it, and never give to children.
  • Gallstones: turmeric increases bile flow. Do not use with gallstones or a blocked bile duct.
  • G6PD deficiency: do not use.
  • Allergies: fenugreek is a legume; avoid if you are allergic to peanuts or chickpeas. Fenugreek can give sweat and urine a maple-syrup smell.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Helixpely Tincture?
Helixpely is a seven-herb liquid blend: black cumin seed (Nigella sativa), coptis root (Coptis chinensis, Chinese goldthread), Chinese licorice root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum), meadowsweet flower (Filipendula ulmaria), slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra) and turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. It gathers a Middle Eastern spice seed, two roots of Chinese herbalism, an Indian kitchen seed, a European meadow flower, a North American tree bark and the golden rhizome of turmeric. Each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule, and it is for adults only. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend carries many cautions, including interactions with prescription medicines, blood thinners and blood-pressure medication, and it is not for pregnancy.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same seven herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, sweet-and-spicy taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What does the name mean? Which licorice and which meadowsweet are in it?
Helixpely is simply the trade name of this seven-herb formula; it is not a description of what the product does, and the product is not a treatment for any infection or condition. The licorice is Chinese licorice, Glycyrrhiza uralensis - the species used in Chinese herbalism, a close relative of the European Glycyrrhiza glabra, with the same glycyrrhizin and the same cautions. The meadowsweet is the flower, which carries more of the natural salicylates than the leaf; we sell meadowsweet leaf and meadowsweet flower separately. The coptis is Coptis chinensis root, also sold as Chinese goldthread, a berberine-rich root related to goldenseal. All seven herbs are available as single extracts.
