Frequently Asked Questions about Slippery Elm Extract
What is slippery elm bark extract used for?
Slippery elm bark extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried inner bark of Ulmus rubra, a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. The inner bark was used medicinally by numerous indigenous peoples - including the Iroquois, Ojibwa, and Cherokee - and was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) from 1820 until 1960. The defining property of slippery elm inner bark is its mucilaginous quality: when the dried bark contacts water, it produces a thick gel-like mucilage that forms a protective coating on mucous membranes throughout the body, making slippery elm one of the most valued demulcent herbs in Western herbalism. As a dietary supplement, slippery elm bark extract is used to support general wellness, healthy mucous membranes, and digestive comfort. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between slippery elm bark drops and slippery elm bark tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers slippery elm bark in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The slippery elm bark tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from the same dried Ulmus rubra inner bark. Note: the mucilaginous compounds in slippery elm bark have limited solubility in high-alcohol preparations; the glycerite format may better capture the demulcent mucilage of the bark.
What is Ulmus rubra?
Ulmus rubra, commonly known as slippery elm, red elm, moose elm, or Indian elm, is a medium to large deciduous tree in the family Ulmaceae, native to eastern North America. Its range extends from southern Quebec and Ontario west to the Dakotas and Nebraska, and south through the central states to Texas and northern Florida, where it grows in rich moist woodlands, floodplains, and rocky hillsides. The tree typically reaches 12-19 meters in height. The species name rubra is the Latin word for red, referring to the reddish-brown color of the inner bark; the genus name Ulmus is the classical Latin name for elm trees. Unlike the rough, furrowed outer bark, the inner bark of Ulmus rubra is distinctively mucilaginous and becomes slippery and gel-like when wetted - the origin of the common name slippery elm. The inner bark, harvested from mature trees, is the plant part used in herbal preparations. HawaiiPharm's slippery elm bark tincture is made from dried Ulmus rubra inner bark.
How do I use slippery elm bark liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking slippery elm bark supplement?
Slippery elm bark mucilage may slow the absorption of oral medications, vitamins, and other supplements by coating the gastrointestinal lining. If you take any prescription medications or supplements, take slippery elm bark extract at least two hours before or after them to minimize any potential effect on absorption. Do not use during pregnancy - slippery elm bark has a traditional history of use for labor induction and has not been established as safe in pregnancy. Not recommended during nursing without prior medical advice. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Ulmaceae family or to elm trees. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Slippery Elm (Ulmus Rubra) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
