Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata), the swamp verbena or American vervain, is a perennial of the verbena family, Verbenaceae, native to wet meadows, ditches, riverbanks, and prairie swales across most of the United States and southern Canada. It grows 60 to 150 centimeters on stiff, square, rough-hairy stems that branch near the top into a candelabra of slender flower spikes. The opposite leaves are lance-shaped, coarsely toothed, and often lobed at the base like spearheads, which is what the Latin epithet means. From midsummer the spikes bloom from the bottom up in rings of tiny violet-blue flowers that draw bees and butterflies. We extract the dried aerial parts.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
