California Poppy, Passionflower & Blue Vervain Tincture
California Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Tincture, California Poppy Aerial Parts, Passion Flower Herb, Blue Vervain Aerial PartsCalifornia Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three North American herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the West, the maypop vine of the Southeast and a violet-spiked wetland plant. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product that causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.
- California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica aerial parts (Papaveraceae)
- Passion flower, herb - Passiflora incarnata herb (Passifloraceae)
- Blue vervain, aerial parts - Verbena hastata aerial parts (Verbenaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
- Passion flower - the maypop, a climbing vine of the southeastern United States with intricate purple-fringed flowers and egg-shaped fruit; the leafy stems are used, gathered when the plant is in flower.
- Blue vervain - a slender perennial of wet meadows and stream banks across North America, with candelabra-like spikes of small violet flowers; the flowering aerial parts are used, not the root.
Why a tincture
The three dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, grassy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. If you take iron supplements, take them at least two hours apart. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as California Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
All three herbs in this blend can cause drowsiness. Please read before use.
- Drowsiness: do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia - passion flower can add to the effect of anesthetics.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - passion flower and blue vervain contain compounds that can stimulate the uterus.
- Blood pressure and iron: blue vervain may lower blood pressure and reduce iron absorption - consult your doctor if you take blood-pressure medicine, and take iron supplements two hours apart.
- MAO inhibitors: consult your doctor before use if you take an MAOI antidepressant.
- Age: not for children.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
