California Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three North American herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the West, the maypop vine of the Southeast and a violet-spiked wetland plant. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product that causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
  • Passion flower - the maypop, a climbing vine of the southeastern United States with intricate purple-fringed flowers and egg-shaped fruit; the leafy stems are used, gathered when the plant is in flower.
  • Blue vervain - a slender perennial of wet meadows and stream banks across North America, with candelabra-like spikes of small violet flowers; the flowering aerial parts are used, not the root.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the grassy bitterness of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. If you take iron supplements, take them at least two hours apart. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as California Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

All three herbs in this blend can cause drowsiness. Please read before use.

  • Drowsiness: do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia - passion flower can add to the effect of anesthetics.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - passion flower and blue vervain contain compounds that can stimulate the uterus.
  • Blood pressure and iron: blue vervain may lower blood pressure and reduce iron absorption - consult your doctor if you take blood-pressure medicine, and take iron supplements two hours apart.
  • MAO inhibitors: consult your doctor before use if you take an MAOI antidepressant.
  • Age: not for children.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is California Poppy, Passionflower and Blue Vervain Alcohol-Free Drops?
This is a three-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: California poppy aerial parts (Eschscholzia californica), passion flower herb (Passiflora incarnata) and blue vervain aerial parts (Verbena hastata), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. California poppy is the orange wildflower of the American West, passion flower the maypop vine of the southeastern United States, and blue vervain a slender wetland plant with violet flower spikes; each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend causes drowsiness.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the grassy bitterness of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is California poppy related to the opium poppy? Which part of blue vervain is used?
California poppy belongs to the poppy family but to a different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum); it contains no opium and none of the opium alkaloids. The passion flower here is Passiflora incarnata, the hardy maypop of the American Southeast, not the tropical fruit passion flower (Passiflora edulis). Blue vervain is used as the aerial parts - the flowering stems and leaves, not the root. All three herbs are also available as single extracts.
