Kigelia (Kigelia africana), the sausage tree, is a semi-deciduous tree of the trumpet-creeper family, Bignoniaceae, native to the savannas and riverbanks of tropical Africa from Senegal to South Africa. It grows 10-20 m with a spreading crown, pinnate leaves and large, dark maroon, trumpet-shaped flowers that open at night, smell unpleasant and are visited by bats. The grey-brown, sausage-shaped fruits hang on long cords, reach 60 cm and weigh up to 10 kg, with a fibrous pulp around flat seeds. We extract the dried bark, fruit and seed separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
