Tian Ma (Gastrodia elata) is a leafless orchid of the orchid family, Orchidaceae, native to the mountain forests of China, Japan, Korea and the Himalaya, where it grows in moist humus and is cultivated in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. It has no green leaves and no chlorophyll, living entirely on nutrients drawn from the fungus Armillaria, which colonizes its tuber. A bare, yellowish-brown stem 60 to 100 cm tall rises in summer with a spike of small urn-shaped, orange-yellow flowers. The oblong, flattened tuber, marked with rings and a parrot-beak bud, is the harvested part. We extract the dried tuber.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
