About Dioscorea villosa

Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a twining perennial vine of the yam family, Dioscoreaceae, native to eastern North America from Connecticut to Florida and Texas, where it climbs through moist woods, thickets and roadside fencerows. Its slender stems twine clockwise to 5 meters with heart-shaped, glossy leaves marked by seven to eleven arching veins, often in whorls near the base of the stem, and small greenish-yellow flowers on separate male and female plants. The three-winged papery capsules persist into winter. The pale, knotty, horizontal rhizome is hard and woody. We extract the dried tuber.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
