Iceland Moss (Cetraria Islandica) is a small branchy bush with leaf thallus. Perennial plant belongs to ordinary lichens, painted in a brownish-green hue with white spots. It reaches a height of 12-15 cm. The thallus consists of flat blades folded in the form of a groove. This branchy bush is attached to the substrate (soil, tree bark or old stumps) with rhizoids. Tall moss is of various colors: from light brown to greenish brown. On the lower part of the thallus there are holes that are designed for air penetration.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Iceland Moss Extract
What is Iceland moss extract used for?
Iceland moss extract is a dietary supplement prepared from the dried whole plant of Cetraria islandica, a foliose lichen of the family Parmeliaceae found throughout the subarctic and high alpine zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Despite its common name, Iceland Moss is not a true moss but a lichen - a composite organism formed by the stable symbiotic association of a fungal partner (mycobiont) and photosynthetic partners (photobionts), typically green algae or cyanobacteria. The thallus of Cetraria islandica is a brownish-green to olive-colored foliose structure with characteristically upturned lobes and ciliate margins. The whole plant contains notable polysaccharides - primarily lichenin and isolichenin (collectively termed lichen starch, a form of beta-glucan) - as well as bitter phenolic compounds including fumarprotocetraric acid and protocetraric acid, and the dibenzofuranoid compound usnic acid. Cetraria islandica has been used as both food and a botanical in Northern European tradition for centuries, particularly in Iceland and Scandinavia, where the lichen was processed into flour and used as a staple during periods of scarcity. It was listed in the Pharmacopoeia Islandica and in multiple European pharmacopoeias through the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a dietary supplement, Iceland moss extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between Iceland moss tincture and glycerite?
HawaiiPharm offers Iceland Moss in two liquid formats. The Iceland Moss Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction. The Iceland Moss Glycerite is an alcohol-free alternative using vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents. Both formats are prepared from the same dried Cetraria islandica whole plant and are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing conducted on each batch.
What is the botanical background of Cetraria islandica?
The name Cetraria derives from the Latin cetra, a small round shield carried by Iberian warriors in Roman-era accounts, describing the shape of the apothecia - the cup-like reproductive structures present on the lichen thallus. The species epithet islandica refers to Iceland, where the lichen was most famously documented by early European naturalists, though it is broadly distributed across the subarctic and alpine zones of Europe, North America, and Asia. Iceland Moss holds an unusual position among botanicals: it is not a plant but a lichen - a stable symbiosis in which a fungal partner (mycobiont) provides structural support and absorbs water and minerals, while a photosynthetic partner (typically green algae or cyanobacteria) contributes carbohydrates via photosynthesis. This dual nature led early naturalists to classify lichens alongside mosses and algae before their composite nature was formally described by Simon Schwendener in 1869 - a discovery controversial enough to be called the 'dual hypothesis' and resisted for decades. Cetraria islandica has served as a food source in Iceland and Scandinavia for centuries: the lichen contains lichenin, a beta-glucan polysaccharide sometimes called lichen starch, which was extracted by boiling and used to make porridge or ground into flour. The intense bitterness from fumarprotocetraric acid was traditionally removed by soaking the lichen in water before processing. Iceland Moss was listed in the Pharmacopoeia Islandica and in multiple European pharmacopoeias through the 19th and early 20th centuries, and featured in Icelandic, Norwegian, and Finnish folk traditions. Note: Iceland Moss (Cetraria islandica) is entirely distinct from Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus), a marine red alga.
How do I use Iceland moss liquid extract?
Adults: take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, juice, or tea, up to four times daily or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Shake well before each use. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medications, or managing an existing health condition. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Are there any precautions for using Iceland moss supplement?
Iceland Moss (Cetraria islandica) contains usnic acid, a compound also found in other lichens; at elevated doses, usnic acid has been associated with hepatotoxicity (liver injury) in case reports involving high-concentration lichen-derived supplements. Use only at the suggested serving size and do not exceed recommended amounts. Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort from the bitter phenolic compounds present in the lichen, primarily fumarprotocetraric acid; if GI discomfort occurs, discontinue use. Iceland Moss preparations are not recommended during pregnancy or nursing, as the safety of Cetraria islandica supplements during pregnancy has not been established in clinical research. Individuals with known sensitivity to lichens or lichen-derived compounds should use this product with caution. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are taking any prescription medications or managing a chronic health condition. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
