Indian Madder (Rubia Cordifolia) is an evergreen, flowering, climbing plant in the Rubiaceae family that usually grows at high altitudes. It can reach up to 1.5 m in height. The leaves are about 5-10 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. They usually grow in whorls of 4 or 7 around the stem. The stems and leaves have small hooks. The flowers are quite little (about 3-5 mm wide) and have 5 light yellow or white-green petals. They grow in dense clusters. The plant produces little (about 4-6 mm in diameter) black berries. The roots are rather thick and can be more than 1 m long.*

What is Indian Madder / Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) root extract?
Indian madder is an evergreen climbing plant of the madder family (Rubiaceae), botanically Rubia cordifolia, native to India and much of Asia. It grows to about a metre and a half, bears small yellow-white flowers three to five millimetres across in dense clusters followed by black berries, and sends down roots that can exceed a metre in length. The part used is the dried root. In Ayurveda the herb is known as Manjistha, from the Sanskrit for bright red; other names include Manjith in Hindi, Manjitti in Tamil, Majeeth in Unani practice, Qian Cao Gen in Chinese herbal tradition, and in English heart-leaved madder, Bengal madder or munjeet. Historically the root was also a source of red dye. The root naturally contains anthraquinone compounds - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-root liquid extract, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rubia cordifolia root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Which madder is this, and is it the powder?
Two clarifications. First, the species: this is Rubia cordifolia, the Indian madder known in Ayurveda as Manjistha. There is more than one plant called madder - we also list Rubia tinctorum, the European or dyer's madder, as a separate product under its own name. They belong to the same genus but are different species from different traditions, and they are not interchangeable; if you specifically want one or the other, check the botanical name on the page. Second, the form: Manjistha is most often sold in Ayurveda as a dried root powder, and that is a different article from ours. Our product is a liquid extract of the root that you take by the drop, diluted in water, tea or juice. Note also that madder has a long history as a red dye plant, so a general search for madder will often bring up textile and pigment material rather than herbal products. We label the botanical name (Rubia cordifolia) and plant part (root) on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Indian Madder liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Indian Madder extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Indian madder is not right for everyone. The root naturally contains anthraquinone compounds, so a concentrated liquid extract should not be taken above the suggested serving, and extended continuous use is not advisable without the guidance of a qualified practitioner. In traditional practice this root is regarded as an emmenagogue, so do not use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. One harmless effect worth knowing about in advance: the natural red pigments in madder root can temporarily give urine a reddish tinge in some people - this is the plant's colour passing through and is not a cause for concern, but it can be startling if unexpected. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place.
