Joint Support Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of four roots extracted together in equal parts: the orange turmeric rhizome, the pungent ginger root, the saponin-rich root of the plains yucca and the sweet liquorice root. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product with important cautions - because of the liquorice it is for short courses only - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend
- Turmeric rhizome - the bright orange underground stem of a ginger-family plant of South Asia, the source of the kitchen spice; it colors this blend and stains everything it touches.
- Ginger root - the knobbly rhizome of a tropical plant of the same family, the spice used fresh and dried in kitchens worldwide, pungent and warming.
- Yucca root - the root of Yucca glauca, the soapweed of the North American Great Plains, a spiky rosette plant with tall spires of cream flowers; the root lathers in water because of its natural saponins. It is a different species from the Mojave yucca and unrelated to the food root yuca (cassava).
- Liquorice root - the long, woody root of a Mediterranean and West Asian legume, intensely sweet from glycyrrhizin; the real liquorice, which most licorice candies do not contain.
Why a tincture
The four dried roots are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a warm, sweet-pungent taste from ginger and liquorice, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Because of the liquorice, do not use this blend for more than four weeks at a time without talking to your practitioner. If you take fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E or K) or any medication, take them at least two hours apart from this blend. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same four-herb blend is available as Joint Support Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains liquorice root and two herbs that affect blood clotting and bile flow. Please read before use.
- Blood pressure, potassium and heart: liquorice root can raise blood pressure, lower potassium and cause fluid retention or an irregular heartbeat with regular use. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease or low potassium.
- Medicines: do not combine liquorice with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids or blood-pressure medication without your doctor. Yucca also has a mild diuretic effect.
- Blood thinners and surgery: turmeric and ginger may slow blood clotting. Consult your doctor if you take warfarin or similar, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Gallstones: do not use if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction - turmeric and ginger stimulate bile flow.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Digestion and vitamins: yucca saponins can cause nausea or loose stools in some people and may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Stay within the label serving and take vitamins two hours apart.
- Duration: use for no more than four weeks at a time.
- See a doctor: persistent pain or swelling needs a medical evaluation. Do not use this blend instead of one, or instead of any prescribed treatment.
- Allergies: liquorice is a legume-family (Fabaceae) plant; yucca belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
- Age: not for children.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
