Frequently Asked Questions about Juniper Extract
What is Juniper (Juniperus monosperma) berry extract?
Juniper is an evergreen conifer of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Our product is made from the berries of Juniperus monosperma, commonly called one-seed juniper. The "berry" is botanically a small fleshy cone, and it is the aromatic part traditionally associated with the flavor of gin. This is a whole-berry liquid extract, offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is worth knowing that our species, one-seed juniper, is a distinct species from the more familiar common juniper (Juniperus communis); both are true junipers with similar aromatic berries. This is a whole-berry extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not the concentrated essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the important safety note below before use, as juniper is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Juniperus monosperma berry; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the berry's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below.
Which juniper is this, and is it the essential oil or gin?
Good questions, since "juniper" covers several things. First, the species: our product is one-seed juniper, Juniperus monosperma, which is a different species from the common juniper (Juniperus communis) that is most often seen in herbal and culinary use. Both are genuine junipers with similar aromatic berries, but they are distinct species, and we label ours clearly. Second, the form: this is a liquid extract of the whole berry taken by the drop, not juniper essential oil. Juniper essential oil is a highly concentrated product that should not be taken internally, so it is important not to confuse the two. Third, gin: juniper berries are famous for flavoring gin, but our product is a herbal supplement extract, not gin or a gin flavoring. Please note as well that ornamental garden junipers and a toxic species called savin (Juniperus sabina) are not the same as the edible juniper berry, and should never be used in their place.
How do I use Juniper berry liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Please read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Juniper berry extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because juniper has some important safety considerations. Most importantly, do not use juniper during pregnancy: it has traditionally been used to stimulate the uterus and is not considered safe in pregnancy, so it must be avoided by anyone who is pregnant, and it is best avoided while nursing as well. Juniper can also be hard on the kidneys, especially with prolonged use, so do not use it if you have kidney disease, and do not use it continuously for long periods. Juniper may also lower blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication. Do not take juniper essential oil internally, and do not use if you are allergic to juniper. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not exceed the suggested serving. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
