What is Lineate Supplejack (Berchemia lineata) root extract?
Lineate supplejack is a climbing shrub of the Rhamnaceae family; its botanical name is Berchemia lineata, and in Chinese tradition the plant is called Tie Bao Jin, meaning "iron-wrapped gold" (you may also see Wu Long Gen). This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried root. It has a long history of folk use in southern China and neighbouring regions, but its internal safety profile has not been well studied in modern research. For that reason, keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and note that it is not for use in pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Berchemia lineata root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is this the same as other "supplejack" plants?
Not necessarily - "supplejack" is a common name shared by several unrelated climbing plants, so the botanical name matters. Ours is Berchemia lineata (Tie Bao Jin), of the Rhamnaceae family. It is different from Berchemia racemosa (another Asian supplejack), and it is completely unrelated to New Zealand supplejack (Ripogonum scandens), which belongs to a different plant family altogether. We label ours clearly as Berchemia lineata so it is not confused with these other "supplejack" vines.
How do I use Lineate Supplejack liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Keep to short-term use and do not exceed the suggested serving. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
