Marsh Skullcap, known scientifically as Scutellaria galericulata, is a charming wildflower that graces the wetlands of North America and Europe. Its striking feature is the hooded blue-violet flowers that bloom atop slender, square stems during the summer months. The plant's appearance is reminiscent of small medieval helmets, which is actually the inspiration behind its name—'skullcap'. This perennial herb thrives in marshy environments, making it a delightful sight along the edges of ponds and streams. With its vibrant flowers and preference for damp soils, Marsh Skullcap not only beautifies its natural habitat but also supports local wildlife, offering nectar to bees and butterflies. Its allure and role in the ecosystem make it a fascinating plant for nature enthusiasts and casual gardeners alike.

Frequently Asked Questions about Marsh Skullcap Extract
What is Marsh Skullcap (Scutellaria galericulata) extract?
Marsh Skullcap is a liquid extract of the aerial herb of Scutellaria galericulata, a small wildflower of the mint family (Lamiaceae) that grows in wetlands and marshy ground across North America and Europe. It is named for its little hooded, blue-violet flowers, and it is also called common skullcap or hooded skullcap. As a Western skullcap, the part used is the above-ground flowering herb, not the root. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-herb liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is sourced in the USA from reputable, germander-free stock and each batch is gluten free. Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Scutellaria galericulata aerial herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
How is Marsh Skullcap different from other skullcaps?
They are all in the genus Scutellaria but they are different species and, in some cases, different plant parts. Marsh Skullcap is Scutellaria galericulata, a Western skullcap used as the aerial herb. We also offer several relatives as separate products: American Skullcap is Scutellaria lateriflora, another Western species used as the aerial herb; Chinese Skullcap, known as Huang Qin, is Scutellaria baicalensis, used as the ROOT in Chinese herbal tradition; and we carry Scutellaria barbata under two listings, Ban Zhi Lian (the herb) and Barbed Skullcap. So when you see the bare word "skullcap" in most references, it usually means the American species, Scutellaria lateriflora, not marsh skullcap. This product is specifically Scutellaria galericulata. We label the botanical name and plant part clearly so there is no confusion between marsh skullcap, American skullcap, Chinese skullcap and the barbata products.
How do I use Marsh Skullcap liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because skullcap can be relaxing, many people prefer to take it in the evening rather than before activities that need full alertness - see the safety notes. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Marsh Skullcap extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Skullcap can have a relaxing, sedative quality, so it may cause drowsiness. Do not combine it with sedative medications, sleep aids or alcohol, and do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. A note on quality: in the herb trade, skullcap has a documented history of being adulterated with germander (Teucrium species), which can be harmful to the liver; we source reputable, correctly identified, germander-free Scutellaria galericulata to avoid this. Use caution during pregnancy and nursing and speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner first. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
