Mu Li is a liquid extract of powdered oyster shell, made from the shell of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (also written Magallana gigas; you may also see the older name Ostrea gigas). It is a shell, not a plant, and is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Mu Li. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Oyster shell is composed mainly of calcium carbonate with a small amount of trace minerals; we mention this only as a description of what the shell is, not as a health claim. It is meant to be taken internally by the drop and the raw material is responsibly sourced. IMPORTANT: this product is made from shellfish - please read the safety and allergy information below before use.

What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same powdered oyster shell; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The material inside is identical. Please follow the safety and allergy notes for both.

Is Mu Li the same as Zhen Zhu Mu, and is it a calcium supplement?

No on both counts. Mu Li is oyster shell (Crassostrea gigas). Zhen Zhu Mu is a different shell - pearl shell or mother-of-pearl from the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera - which we sell separately; both are shell-based but from different mollusks. (Note also that some other herbs share part of the pinyin name but are unrelated plants, such as Zhi Mu, which is Anemarrhena, a root.) On the calcium question: oyster shell is naturally high in calcium carbonate, but this product is a traditional herbal liquid extract taken by the drop, and we do not sell or describe it as a calcium supplement or make any bone, calcium or antacid claims for it.

How do I use Mu Li / oyster-shell liquid extract?

Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
