Memory Advance Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of seven herbs extracted together: an Indian marsh herb, the leaf of the ginkgo tree, two Mediterranean kitchen herbs, a Chinese berry, a tropical rhizome and the South American holly brewed as mate. Each is also sold on its own. This blend contains caffeine and is for adults only - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Bacopa (brahmi) - a small creeping succulent of wet ground across India and the tropics, with fleshy leaves and tiny white flowers; the whole herb is used. It is the bacopa brahmi, a different plant from gotu kola, which also carries the name brahmi in some regions.
  • Ginkgo leaf - the fan-shaped leaf of Ginkgo biloba, the last survivor of a tree lineage older than the dinosaurs. The leaf, not the seed, is used here.
  • Sage and rosemary - two aromatic evergreens of the Mediterranean scrub and the kitchen garden, both in the mint family: the soft gray-green leaf of common garden sage and the needle-like leaf of rosemary. This is Salvia officinalis, not red sage (danshen) or white sage.
  • Schisandra berry (Wu Wei Zi, the five-flavor fruit) - the red berry of a woody vine of northern China and the Russian Far East, named for tasting sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent at once.
  • Turmeric rhizome - the bright orange underground stem of a ginger-family plant of South Asia, the source of the kitchen spice; it stains everything it touches.
  • Yerba mate - the leaf of a South American holly, dried and brewed as the traditional mate of Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil; it naturally contains caffeine.

Why a tincture

The seven dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, aromatic taste with notes of sage and rosemary, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Adults only. Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it in the morning or early afternoon because of the caffeine, and do not combine with coffee, energy drinks or other caffeine or stimulant products. Because sage leaf contains thujone, use this blend in short courses of no more than two weeks at a time without talking to your practitioner. If you take any medication, take this blend at least two hours apart from it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same seven-herb blend is available as Memory Advance Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs. Our Memory Booster Tincture is a different three-herb blend of ginkgo, gotu kola and rosemary.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains caffeine and sage (thujone), and several of its herbs interact with common medicines. It is for adults only. Please read before use.

  • Medicines processed by the liver: schisandra and bacopa can change blood levels of many prescription drugs, including tacrolimus and cyclosporine (transplant medicines), statins, benzodiazepines, antidepressants and some blood-pressure medicines. Do not use with prescription medicines without your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Bleeding and surgery: ginkgo, turmeric, rosemary and sage may slow blood clotting. Do not combine with warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or other blood thinners without your doctor. Stop use at least two weeks before surgery or dental work.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - sage and schisandra in supplement doses may stimulate the uterus.
  • Seizures: sage contains thujone, and ginkgo and rosemary may also lower the seizure threshold. Do not use if you have epilepsy or take anticonvulsant medication.
  • Caffeine: yerba mate contains caffeine, which can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause restlessness or sleeplessness. Do not use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, an anxiety disorder or caffeine sensitivity, and do not combine with other caffeine or stimulant products.
  • Gallstones: do not use if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (turmeric).
  • Thyroid: bacopa may raise thyroid hormone levels - consult your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
  • Blood sugar: sage and rosemary may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Slow heart rate and anticholinergic medicines: bacopa may slow the heart and counteract anticholinergic drugs - consult your doctor.
  • Duration: because of the thujone in sage, use in courses of no more than two weeks at a time.
  • Allergies: sage and rosemary are mint-family (Lamiaceae) plants.
  • Age: adults only - not for children or teenagers.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Memory Advance Tincture?
Memory Advance is a seven-herb liquid blend: bacopa herb (Bacopa monnieri, brahmi), ginkgo leaf (Ginkgo biloba), rosemary leaf, sage leaf (Salvia officinalis), schisandra berry, turmeric rhizome and yerba mate leaf (Ilex paraguariensis), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. The blend brings together an Indian marsh herb, the leaf of an ancient tree, two Mediterranean kitchen herbs, a Chinese berry, a tropical rhizome and the South American holly whose leaves are brewed as mate. Yerba mate contains caffeine, so this blend contains caffeine. Each herb is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture for adults, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - several of these herbs interact with common medicines.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same seven herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, aromatic taste with notes of sage and rosemary. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Both contain caffeine from yerba mate. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Does Memory Advance contain caffeine? How is it different from Memory Booster and Brain And Memory Care?
Yes - yerba mate is a natural source of caffeine, so take Memory Advance earlier in the day and do not combine it with coffee, energy drinks or other stimulants. Memory Booster and Brain And Memory Care are our three-herb blends of ginkgo, gotu kola and rosemary; Memory Advance is a different seven-herb formula with bacopa, sage, schisandra, turmeric and yerba mate, and no gotu kola. The sage here is common garden sage (Salvia officinalis), not red sage (danshen) or white sage. Brahmi in this blend is Bacopa monnieri; in some regions the name brahmi is also given to gotu kola, which is a different plant. All seven herbs are also available as single extracts.
How do I use Memory Advance Tincture?
