The plant grows 10-30 cm tall with slender branching stems, small oblong to elliptic leaves, and tubular pale blue or white flowers; the flower shape, which resembles a conch shell, gives rise to the Sanskrit common name: shankha means conch shell and pushpa means flower. The species name pluricaulis derives from the Latin pluri (many) and caulis (stem), meaning many-stemmed; the genus name Convolvulus derives from the Latin convolvere, meaning to wind around, a reference to the twining habit of many species in the Convolvulaceae family. Convolvulus pluricaulis has been classified in classical Ayurvedic texts among the medhya rasayana herbs and is recognized as the standard botanical source of shankhpushpi in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
