  • Saponins: the pod is rich in natural saponins, which foam and, taken by mouth in larger amounts, can be emetic (cause vomiting) and irritate the stomach - sometimes causing nausea or loose stools. Keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use; more is not better.
  • Fertility: shikakai saponins have a spermicidal effect - avoid internal use if you are trying to conceive or are undergoing fertility treatment.
  • Eyes: keep it away from the eyes; if any gets in, rinse promptly with plain water.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.

What is Shikakai (Acacia concinna) whole pod extract?
Shikakai is a liquid extract of the dried whole pod of Acacia concinna (now also classified as Senegalia rugata), a climbing shrub of the Fabaceae (legume) family, also called soap-pod or soap acacia and known in Ayurveda as Saptala. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is important to know that shikakai is best known as a traditional Indian hair and scalp wash: the pod is rich in natural foaming compounds called saponins, and its main real-world use is external (as a natural cleanser). Any internal use is specialized and, in tradition, is done only under trained guidance in small amounts. Please read the safety notes below before considering internal use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Acacia concinna whole pod; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The pod inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is shikakai the same as Acacia (arabica), Gum Arabic or Catechu?
No - several different plants are all called "acacia," so it helps to be clear. Shikakai is Acacia concinna (Senegalia rugata), and we use the whole pod. Acacia bark on our site is a different species, Acacia arabica (now Vachellia nilotica), and it is the bark. Gum Arabic is another species again, Acacia senegal (Senegalia senegal), and it is the dried gum. Catechu is Acacia catechu (Senegalia catechu), sold as the herb. These are different species and different plant parts with different traditional uses, so they are not interchangeable. We label ours clearly as shikakai / soap-pod (Acacia concinna) whole pod.
How do I use Shikakai liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because shikakai pod is rich in saponins, do not exceed the suggested serving - more is not better, and larger amounts can upset the stomach. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Keep it away from the eyes, and rinse with plain water if any is splashed in. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
