Skin Support Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts: a root, a seed and two leaves from the most familiar hedgerow and garden plants of Europe. Three of the four belong to the daisy family. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Burdock, root - Arctium lappa root (Asteraceae)
  • Dandelion, leaf - Taraxacum officinale leaf (Asteraceae) - the leaf, not the root
  • Milk thistle, seed - Silybum marianum seed (Asteraceae)
  • Stinging nettle, leaf - Urtica dioica leaf (Urticaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Burdock - the long, sweet-earthy taproot of the great burdock, the tall plant whose hooked burrs inspired Velcro; the root is dug in the plant's first year and is eaten as gobo in Japan.
  • Dandelion - the toothed green leaf of the lawn weed, eaten as a bitter salad green in France and Italy. This blend uses the leaf; the root is a separate product.
  • Milk thistle - the small, hard seeds of a tall purple-flowered Mediterranean thistle named for the white veins on its leaves.
  • Stinging nettle - the hedgerow herb whose young leaves lose their sting when dried or cooked; a traditional spring green.

Why a tincture

The dried root, seed and leaves are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a green, earthy, slightly bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same four-herb blend is available as Skin Support Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Three of the four herbs in this blend are daisy-family plants. Please read before use.

  • Allergies: burdock, dandelion and milk thistle are daisy-family (Asteraceae) plants - do not use if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums or marigolds; severe reactions to milk thistle have been reported. Nettle can cause skin sensitivity in some people.
  • Blood thinners: burdock and milk thistle may slow clotting, while nettle is rich in vitamin K and can weaken warfarin. Consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Diuretics and blood pressure: dandelion, nettle and burdock increase urine output and may affect potassium and blood pressure - consult your doctor if you take diuretics, lithium or blood-pressure medication.
  • Blood sugar: all four herbs may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - burdock and nettle are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
  • Gallstones: avoid if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (dandelion).
  • See a doctor: persistent or spreading skin changes need medical diagnosis. Do not use this or any herbal product in place of medical care.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Skin Support Tincture?
Skin Support is a four-herb liquid blend: burdock root (Arctium lappa), dandelion leaf (Taraxacum officinale), milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum) and stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. These are four of the most familiar roadside and garden herbs of Europe, three of them from the daisy family; all four are also sold on their own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same four herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a green, earthy, slightly bitter taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this the same formula as before? Is the dandelion the leaf or the root?
The current Skin Support formula contains four herbs: burdock root, dandelion leaf, milk thistle seed and stinging nettle leaf. Older listings mentioned Oregon grape root, yellow dock and echinacea - those are not part of the current blend, although each is available from us as a single extract. The dandelion here is the leaf, not the root; the two parts have different traditional profiles, and we sell them separately. The burdock is the long taproot of the great burdock, harvested in its first year.
