Frequently Asked Questions about Chinese Tinospora Extract
What is Chinese Tinospora (Tinospora sinensis) extract?
Chinese Tinospora is Tinospora sinensis, a deciduous climbing vine of the family Menispermaceae, known in Chinese herbal tradition as Kuan Jin Teng (the twig is called Caulis Tinosporae Sinensis). This is a liquid extract of the dried twig, offered here as an alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please note this is Tinospora sinensis (Kuan Jin Teng), not the Ayurvedic Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and not the hepatotoxic species Tinospora crispa.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Tinospora sinensis twig; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits you. The twig inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
Is Chinese Tinospora the same as Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)?
They are closely related but we list them separately. Chinese Tinospora is Tinospora sinensis (Kuan Jin Teng), and we use its twig; it is the herb of Chinese tradition. Guduchi is Tinospora cordifolia, the herb of Ayurvedic tradition, and we use its root. The two species are sometimes treated as synonyms by botanists, but they are offered here as distinct products with different plant parts and traditions. Importantly, neither is Tinospora crispa, a related species that has been linked to liver toxicity and which we do not carry. We label this page clearly as Tinospora sinensis twig.
How is Chinese Tinospora extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Chinese Tinospora safe? Safety information.
Chinese Tinospora (Tinospora sinensis, Kuan Jin Teng) is regarded as non-toxic in traditional use, but a few cautions apply. Pregnancy and nursing: safety data are lacking and it is traditionally avoided after childbirth, so do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding except under a physician's advice. Species note: this is Tinospora sinensis; it is not Tinospora crispa, a related species that has been associated with liver toxicity. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
