Frequently Asked Questions about Kelp Extract
What is Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum)?
Kelp, in this product, is Ascophyllum nodosum, a cold-water brown seaweed harvested from the clean waters around Iceland. It is more precisely called knotted wrack or Norwegian kelp, and it is a type of rockweed. The part used here is the whole plant (the seaweed's thallus). This is a whole-plant liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is worth knowing that "kelp" is a broad term: our species, Ascophyllum nodosum, is a rockweed and is not the same as the large true kelps such as Laminaria, nor is it bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), a close relative it is often confused with. Like other seaweeds, it naturally contains iodine, so please read the safety information below. This is a whole-plant extract that carries the seaweed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seaweed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is this true kelp, bladderwrack, or edible seaweed?
These are easy to mix up, so here is the distinction. The word "kelp" is used loosely for many brown seaweeds. Our product is Ascophyllum nodosum, a rockweed known as knotted wrack or Norwegian kelp; it is different from the large true kelps such as Laminaria and Macrocystis. It is also a different species from bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), even though the two are close relatives, often confused, and sometimes both sold simply as "kelp." And it is different from the edible seaweeds used in cooking, such as kombu, wakame, and nori; our product is a supplement extract, not a culinary seaweed or a garden seaweed fertilizer. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Ascophyllum nodosum) and part (whole plant) so there is no confusion with true kelp, bladderwrack, or food seaweed.
How do I use Kelp liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Kelp extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because kelp has some important safety considerations, mainly because of its iodine content. Kelp is naturally high in iodine, and the amount can vary, so too much iodine can affect how the thyroid works - in either direction. For this reason, do not use kelp if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication unless your healthcare practitioner is supervising you, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Avoid kelp during pregnancy and nursing, or consult your practitioner first, because excess iodine can be harmful. Like other seaweeds, kelp can also take up heavy metals such as arsenic from seawater, which is another reason to use a carefully sourced product and not to exceed the suggested amount. Kelp also contains vitamin K, which can interact with blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, and it contains potassium, so use caution if you have kidney disease. Do not use if you are allergic to seaweed or iodine. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Kelp (Ascophyllum Nodosum) Whole Plant is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
