Triphala Alcohol-Free Drops Blend
Triphala Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Amla Fruit, Haritaki Fruit, Bibhitaki FruitTriphala Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of triphala - Sanskrit for "three fruits" - the best-known formula of Ayurvedic tradition: three dried fruits from India extracted together in equal parts. Each fruit is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.
- Amla, fruit - Phyllanthus emblica fruit (syn. Emblica officinalis; Phyllanthaceae) - Indian gooseberry
- Haritaki, fruit - Terminalia chebula fruit (Combretaceae) - chebulic myrobalan
- Bibhitaki, fruit - Terminalia bellirica fruit (Combretaceae) - beleric myrobalan
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Fruits responsibly sourced from India. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Amla - the small, sour, pale-green fruit of the Indian gooseberry tree, one of the most revered fruits of Ayurveda and a common pickle and chutney ingredient in India.
- Haritaki - the ridged, olive-shaped fruit of the chebulic myrobalan tree, astringent and bitter; Ayurvedic texts hold it in the highest regard, and it gives triphala most of its character.
- Bibhitaki - the round, velvety fruit of the beleric myrobalan, a large deciduous tree of the Indian plains, milder and slightly sweet-astringent.
Traditionally the three fruits are dried, ground and mixed in equal parts as triphala churna, a powder stirred into warm water. This product gives you the same three fruits as a liquid extract: taken by the drop, no mixing, and with a serving printed on the label rather than the teaspoon amounts used for churna.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The dried fruits are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the sour astringency of the fruits.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the fruits - a good match for these tannin-rich myrobalans. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it at least two hours apart from medication and iron supplements (see the safety note). Ayurvedic tradition takes triphala in the evening, but any time of day is fine. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-fruit blend is available as Triphala Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The fruits and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Please read before use.
- Bowel effect: triphala is mildly laxative, especially haritaki. Larger amounts can cause loose stools, cramping or gas - stay within the label serving, and stop if you develop diarrhea. Do not take any laxative-type herb continuously for long periods; use it in short courses, as prolonged daily use can lead to dependence and loss of fluids and electrolytes.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - haritaki is a traditional purgative, and safety in pregnancy has not been established.
- Medication and iron timing: the fruits are rich in tannins, which can reduce the absorption of medicines and iron. Take this blend at least two hours before or after any medication or iron supplement.
- Blood thinners and blood sugar: amla may add to the effect of anticoagulants and of diabetes medication - consult your doctor if you take either.
- Age: not for children.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
