The plant grows 10-35 cm tall from a deep, fleshy tuberous rootstock, with heart-shaped to kidney-shaped leaves with wavy, scalloped margins, and bears small flowers on slender stems ranging in color from dark reddish-purple to nearly black; this unusually dark flower color is a distinctive feature that differentiates Pelargonium sidoides from most other Pelargonium species, which typically produce pink, red, or white flowers.
