Yellow dock has long curly leaves that appear to have been "crisped" at their edges. It bears multiple clusters of three-winged flowers. Its seeds are green in the summer but they become deep red as they mature. The root of yellow dock bright yellow below the bark. Curled dock has a long history of domestic herbal use.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Yellow Dock Extract
What is yellow dock root extract used for?
Yellow dock root extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Rumex crispus, a perennial herb in the family Polygonaceae native to Europe and western Asia and widely naturalized throughout North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. The dried root is a source of anthraquinone glycosides including emodin, chrysophanol, and physcion, hydroxyanthraquinone compounds characteristic of the Rumex genus; tannins including condensed tannins of the proanthocyanidin type; the flavonoid glycoside rutin (quercetin-3-O-rutinoside); and oxalic acid and oxalate compounds. Rumex crispus root was used in the traditional wellness practices of Indigenous peoples of eastern North America and was adopted by 19th-century American Eclectic physicians as one of the most commonly used botanical preparations in North American herbal medicine; it was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia and National Formulary historically. As a dietary supplement, yellow dock root extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between yellow dock drops and yellow dock tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers yellow dock root in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The yellow dock root tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Rumex crispus root and are liquid herbal extracts, offering a different format from yellow dock capsule and tablet preparations.
What is Rumex crispus?
Rumex crispus, commonly known as yellow dock, curly dock, or curled dock, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Polygonaceae native to Europe and western Asia, now one of the most widely naturalized plants in temperate regions worldwide, including all of North America, much of South America, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia. The plant grows 50-150 cm tall with a deep, fleshy taproot that shows a characteristic yellow-to-brown color in cross-section, giving rise to the common name yellow dock; the elongated, lance-shaped leaves have distinctively wavy or crisped margins, which give rise to both the common name curly dock and the Latin species epithet crispus, meaning curled or wavy. Small greenish flowers are arranged in dense whorls forming tall, slender racemes; the fruits are small triangular achenes enclosed in three heart-shaped valves that turn reddish-brown at maturity. The genus name Rumex is the classical Latin name used by Pliny and other Roman writers for sorrel and dock plants of this genus. The Polygonaceae family includes buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), knotweed (Polygonum), and rhubarb (Rheum), all characterized by the distinctive ochrea, a sheath-like stipule wrapping the stem at each node. HawaiiPharm's yellow dock root tincture is made from dried Rumex crispus root.
How do I use yellow dock liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking yellow dock supplement?
Yellow dock root contains oxalic acid and oxalate compounds; consult a healthcare provider before use if you have a history of kidney stones, calcium oxalate kidney stones, gout, or conditions that require dietary oxalate restriction. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have an inflammatory bowel condition or other intestinal disorder, as anthraquinone compounds present in Rumex crispus root may affect gastrointestinal function. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take iron supplements or mineral supplements, as tannin-rich botanical preparations may affect mineral absorption. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, as the safety of Rumex crispus root extract during pregnancy has not been established and traditional references include emmenagogue properties. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take anticoagulant or blood-thinning medications. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
