Its range extends from the Canadian prairies south through the central United States to Texas and New Mexico, where it grows in open grasslands, dry prairies, and rocky slopes. The plant forms a compact rosette of long, narrow, rigid leaves with sharp terminal spines, reaching 30-90 cm in height, and produces a tall flowering stalk of white to cream bell-shaped flowers.
