Frequently Asked Questions about Wintergreen Extract
What is Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) topical extract?
Wintergreen is the common name for Gaultheria procumbens, a low evergreen shrub of the heath family (Ericaceae), also called Eastern Teaberry, Checkerberry, or Boxberry. This is a liquid extract of the dried leaf FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, applied to the skin. Wintergreen naturally contains salicylates (methyl salicylate), which are in the aspirin family and can be absorbed through the skin, so it must be used carefully and never swallowed. Please read the important safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gaultheria procumbens leaf for external use; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits your topical routine. The leaf inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is Wintergreen the same as Sweet Birch?
No - they are different plants, though they share a signature aroma. Wintergreen is Gaultheria procumbens, a heath-family evergreen, and we use its leaf. Sweet Birch is Betula lenta, a tree we list separately. Both naturally contain methyl salicylate (the aspirin-family compound), which is why they smell alike and why both carry salicylate cautions. They are not the same plant; we label this page clearly as Gaultheria procumbens leaf.
How do I use Wintergreen topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to small areas of intact skin only - do not use on broken skin, do not cover with a bandage or heat, and do not apply to large areas, since salicylates can be absorbed through the skin. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and NEVER swallow this product. Discontinue use if any irritation occurs. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Wintergreen topical safe for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. External use only - never internal: this product contains salicylates (methyl salicylate), the aspirin family, which can be absorbed through the skin and cause salicylate poisoning, so never swallow it and do not apply it to large areas or under heat or bandages. Children: do NOT apply to children or teenagers, especially anyone with a viral illness, because absorbed salicylates are linked to Reye's syndrome; do not use on children under 6. Aspirin/NSAID allergy: do not use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin, salicylates, or NSAID pain relievers. Medication: if you take blood thinners or other medication, consult your practitioner first. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. Skin: apply to intact skin only, do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops; keep away from the eyes.
