Frequently Asked Questions about Birch Extract
What is Birch (Betula pendula) leaf extract?
Birch is a liquid extract of the leaf of Betula pendula, the silver birch, a tree of the Betulaceae family; the leaf is known pharmaceutically as Betulae folium. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things matter up front: birch is a well-known cause of pollen allergy, so this leaf is not suitable for people allergic to birch pollen (and it can cross-react with certain foods), and it naturally contains salicylates (aspirin-like compounds); both points are covered in the safety notes below. This is the leaf of Betula pendula - a different part and species from our birch bark products (Betula alba and Betula lenta), which we list separately.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Betula pendula leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The leaf inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is birch leaf the same as birch bark?
No - same tree family, but different parts and species, so it helps to be clear. Ours is the leaf of Betula pendula (silver birch). Our birch bark products are different: one is Betula alba bark and the other is Betula lenta (sweet or black birch) bark. Betula lenta in particular is rich in methyl salicylate (the wintergreen compound) and is quite different in character. So birch "leaf" and birch "bark," and the different Betula species, are not interchangeable. We label ours clearly as birch (Betula pendula) leaf so it is distinct from the barks.
How do I use Birch leaf liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and drink plenty of water. Because of the allergy, salicylate and diuretic cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Birch leaf right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pollen allergy: birch is a major cause of pollen allergy, so do NOT use birch leaf if you are allergic to birch pollen; it can also cross-react in some people with mugwort, celery and wild carrot, and with foods such as apples, soybeans, hazelnuts and peanuts. The most common side effects are allergic - hives, rash, itchy eyes, runny nose or wheezing - so stop use and seek care if these occur. Salicylates and aspirin: birch naturally contains salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), so avoid it if you are sensitive to aspirin or salicylates, and do not combine it with aspirin. Fluid balance: birch leaf is a diuretic (it increases urine), so do NOT use it if you have swelling (edema) related to heart or kidney disease, take other diuretics, or have high blood pressure, without medical advice; drink plenty of fluids. Age: it is recommended for adults and children over twelve only. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Birch (Betula Pendula) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
