Important safety information - please read before use

Boat sterculia (Pang Da Hai) is gentle in tradition, but a few specific cautions apply.

  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Digestion: in traditional Chinese medicine it is a "cooling" herb, so it does not suit people with a cold or weak digestive system - if you tend to have loose stools or diarrhea, avoid it, as it may make things worse.
  • Duration / medicines: it is not intended for long-term use, and it may interfere with some medications - if you take any medicine, consult your practitioner first and keep use short-term.
  • Mucilage: the seed swells into a gel, so always take the extract well diluted in plenty of liquid.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Boat Sterculia Extract
What is Boat Sterculia / Pang Da Hai (Scaphium affine) seed extract?
Boat sterculia is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Scaphium affine, a tree of the Malvaceae family native to Southeast Asia; the seed is known in traditional Chinese medicine as Pang Da Hai and in English as the malva nut. Its most famous property is physical: when soaked in water the seed swells dramatically into a soft, jelly-like mucilage, which is used in traditional drinks and desserts. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A few cautions matter: it is not for use in pregnancy, it is a "cooling" herb that does not suit everyone, and it is not intended for long-term use - all covered in the safety notes. It should not be confused with Malva (Malva sylvestris), a different mallow plant.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Scaphium affine seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is malva nut the same as malva (mallow)?
No - the names overlap but they are different plants. Ours is Scaphium affine, the malva nut or Pang Da Hai (boat sterculia), a seed from a Southeast Asian tree of the Malvaceae family; it is sometimes listed under the older botanical names Sterculia lychnophora or Scaphium lychnophorum, which is where the "sterculia" name comes from. Malva - as in Malva sylvestris (common mallow) - is a different plant we would list separately, even though it is in the same broad family and is also mucilaginous. So "malva nut" and "malva" are not the same. We label ours clearly as boat sterculia / Pang Da Hai (Scaphium affine) seed.
How do I use Boat Sterculia liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because the seed is naturally mucilaginous (it swells and gels), dilute the extract well in plenty of liquid. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use it long-term. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
