Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) is 60 cm high, but can reach 1 m. Stems are up-straight, finely bearded, finely rough along the ribs. Shoots are transformed into phylloclades, which look like leathery sessile non-falling plates with small narrow filmy subulate leaves in the axils of phylloclades. Phylloclades are strong, leathery, and lanceolate. The flowers are small, located on the underside of the phyllocladium, in the axils of the small lanceolate bracts. Berries are large, red, 8-10 mm in diameter, two-seeded. Blooming period is in February and April. Fruits are fleshy, red.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Butcher's Broom Extract
What is Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) root extract?
Butcher's Broom is a small, spiny evergreen shrub botanically named Ruscus aculeatus, a member of the Asparagaceae family and a relative of asparagus. It is native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe, where it grows in dry woodlands and rocky ground. Rather than true leaves, the plant bears flattened stem structures called phylloclades that end in a sharp point, along with small greenish flowers and bright red berries. The common name comes from a centuries-old practice: butchers once bound the stiff, mature branches into a broom to sweep and scour their chopping blocks. Our extract is made from the dried root and rhizome of the plant, the traditional part used in European herbalism. Each batch is prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same wild-harvested Ruscus aculeatus root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses pure pharmacy-grade alcohol with vegetable glycerin and artesian purified water, the classic conventional extraction method. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild, sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
What is Butcher's Broom root and what are its other names?
Butcher's Broom root is best known botanically for its steroidal saponins - naturally occurring plant compounds including ruscogenin and neoruscogenin. These saponins are simply a natural part of the root's chemistry; our extract preserves the plant's own spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating any single isolated compound. The plant carries a colorful set of folk names that reflect its appearance and history. Because its stiff, prickly shoots resemble holly, it has long been called box holly and knee holly; other traditional English names include pettigree and sweet broom. Its botanical name, Ruscus aculeatus, pairs the classical Latin name for the plant (ruscus) with aculeatus, meaning "prickly" or "spiny," a nod to the sharp tips of its phylloclades. We label our product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with ornamental Ruscus greenery sold by florists.
How do I use Butcher's Broom liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Butcher's Broom extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Butcher's Broom is generally well tolerated, but it is not appropriate for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, have high blood pressure, or take any medication, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, as the root's saponins may occasionally cause mild stomach upset. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)

  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
