Asparagus (Asparagus cochinchinensis), in Chinese medicine known as Tian Men Dong belongs to the asparagus family. It is a perennial plant growing up to 1.5 m high. Asparagus is distributed in some countries of East Asia: near seashores in Japan, and in thinly forested slopes, roadsides and waste fields in China. It blooms in May and June; the seeds ripen in September. As an edible plant, it has long been known in Europe since the time of Ancient Rome. Young sprouts up to 20 cm high are eaten. They are harvested in April-May. This plant is not only medicinal and edible, but also decorative.
