Anise (Pimpinella Anisum) is an annual herbaceous plant up to 60 cm high with a branchy stem covered with a short fluff. Inflorescences are complex umbrellas located on the tops of stems and branches. The flowers are small, white, and inconspicuous. Fruit is ovoid or slightly heart-shaped two-seeded, brownish-gray in color. Anise blooms in June - July, bears fruit in August.*

What is Anise (Pimpinella anisum) seed extract?

Anise seed extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried seed of Pimpinella anisum, an annual herb of the Apiaceae family - the same family as carrot, parsley, fennel and coriander. In herbal writing the seed is usually called aniseed. Strictly speaking it is a small dry fruit rather than a true seed, but aniseed is the settled trade name and the one you will see on labels. Our raw material is grown in Egypt, one of the classic growing regions for this plant, and dried before extraction. The extract is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized compound, and it is not an essential oil. Each batch is produced in an FDA-registered facility in Hawaii and checked by FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation, along with microbiological screening. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Pimpinella anisum seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both are made in an FDA-registered facility under the same identity and microbiological testing. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Is anise the same as star anise, fennel, or licorice?

No - and the confusion is understandable, because all of them taste similar. Our product is Pimpinella anisum, a small annual herb in the Apiaceae family, the carrot and parsley family. Star anise is Illicium verum, a tree in the family Schisandraceae, and its star-shaped dried fruit is a completely different plant material; we sell it separately as its own product. The two share a liquorice-like flavour because both contain anethole, an aromatic compound, but they are not botanically related. Fennel is Foeniculum vulgare, a genuine relative of anise within the Apiaceae, with its own seed and its own product page. Licorice is different again - Glycyrrhiza, in the pea family - and shares nothing with anise but the taste association. It is also worth saying what this product is not: it is not the anise flavouring extract sold for baking cookies and biscotti, and it is not anise essential oil, which is a far more concentrated preparation in a different product category. This is a liquid herbal extract of Pimpinella anisum seed. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so it is clear which plant you are getting.

How do I use Anise seed liquid extract?

Is Anise seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

Please read this before use, as there are three points that matter. First, and most important: this product is for adults and must not be given to infants or young children. Anise has a long folk history in gripe water and infant colic preparations, and that is precisely where harm has been documented - published cases describe infants developing seizures and other neurological symptoms after being given anise and star anise preparations, with concentrated oil forms carrying the greatest risk. Do not use this product for an infant under any circumstances. Second, the dominant constituent of anise, trans-anethole, has documented estrogenic activity, so anise is best avoided if you have a hormone-sensitive condition such as breast, uterine or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids, and it should be avoided during pregnancy; if you are nursing, speak with your practitioner first. Third, anise belongs to the Apiaceae family and takes part in what allergists call the celery-mugwort-birch-spice syndrome: people who react to celery, or to birch or mugwort pollen, may also react to anise, fennel, coriander and cumin. Do not use it if you know you react to any of these. Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or are managing a health condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place.
