Osha Root (Bear Root) Tincture - Liquid Extract

The Osha Root Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction and one well suited to the root's aromatic, resinous oils. The Osha Root Glycerite is an alcohol-free alternative using vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents. Both formats are prepared from the same wild-harvested, dried Ligusticum porteri root using low-temperature maceration, ensuring a broad-spectrum phytochemical profile. Both are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing for each batch.

Ligusticum porteri is a perennial herb of the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), the carrot and parsley family, native to high-altitude meadows and coniferous forests of the Rocky Mountains and southwestern North America, often growing between 2,000 and 3,000 meters of elevation. The genus name Ligusticum refers to Liguria, the region of northwestern Italy long associated with the related herb lovage; the species epithet porteri honors the 19th-century American botanist Thomas Conrad Porter. The common names osha, bear root, and bear medicine reflect the traditional observation that bears seek out the root, reportedly digging for it and rolling in it after emerging from hibernation; the Spanish name chuchupate is widely used in Mexico. A defining feature of osha is that it cannot be successfully cultivated on a commercial scale: it depends on a symbiotic relationship with specific soil fungi (mycorrhizae) in its native high-mountain habitat, so all osha is wild-harvested. For this reason it appears on the United Plant Savers "At-Risk" list, and responsible, sustainable harvesting is essential. Important safety note: the Apiaceae family also contains highly toxic look-alikes such as poison hemlock and water hemlock, which is why verified botanical identity and laboratory testing of the harvested root are critical. Other relatives include lovage, celery, carrot, parsley, fennel, and angelica.
