California Poppy and St John's Wort Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the American West and the yellow-flowered midsummer plant of European meadows. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product that causes drowsiness, and St John's wort interacts with many prescription medicines - please read the safety information below before use.

  • California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica aerial parts (Papaveraceae)
  • St John's wort, herb - Hypericum perforatum flowering tops (Hypericaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (California poppy from France, St John's wort from Chile). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
  • St John's wort - a sunny meadow plant with star-shaped yellow flowers that bloom around midsummer; the flowering tops turn extracts a deep red. It is one of the most studied herbs in Europe, and also one of the most likely to interact with medicines.

Why a tincture

The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, grassy taste and the deep red color that St John's wort gives to alcohol extracts, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and avoid strong sun and tanning beds while using it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and St John's Wort Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Frequently Asked Questions
What is California Poppy and St John's Wort Tincture?
This is a two-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: California poppy aerial parts (Eschscholzia californica) and St John's wort herb (Hypericum perforatum), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. California poppy is the orange wildflower of the American West, and St John's wort the yellow-flowered meadow plant of Europe whose flowering tops turn extracts a deep red; each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - St John's wort interacts with many prescription medicines, and this blend causes drowsiness.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature, a bitter, grassy taste and the deep red color that St John's wort gives to alcohol extracts. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is California poppy related to the opium poppy? Can I take this blend with my medication?
California poppy belongs to the poppy family but to a different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum); it contains no opium and none of the opium alkaloids. On medication: St John's wort speeds up the breakdown of many drugs and can make them stop working - including oral contraceptives, warfarin, digoxin, statins, HIV medicines, transplant medicines and some chemotherapy - and it must never be combined with antidepressants. If you take any prescription medicine, do not use this blend without asking your doctor or pharmacist first. Both herbs are also available as single extracts.
