California Poppy and Valerian Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts: the golden state flower of California and the classic evening root of European herbalism. The blend is named for its two ingredients; both are also sold on their own. Both herbs can cause drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.
- California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica flowering herb (Papaveraceae) - not the opium poppy; contains no opiates. Origin: France
- Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae). Origin: Poland
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water

What is in the blend
- California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
- Valerian - the pale, stringy root of a tall pink-flowered meadow plant of Europe and Asia, famous for its pungent, earthy smell and one of the oldest herbs of the European evening tradition.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method, and the traditional way to capture valerian root. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, bitter, earthy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It may cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and do not combine it with alcohol. Use it for short periods rather than continuously. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and Valerian Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Both herbs in this blend can cause drowsiness. Please read before use.
- Drowsiness: do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Duration: use in short courses. Stopping suddenly after weeks of daily high-dose valerian has caused withdrawal-type symptoms.
- Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with valerian products. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine.
- Age: not for children.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
