What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Smilax china rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.

How is China Root different from Tu Fu Ling and sarsaparilla?

Several plants in the Smilax genus have overlapping common names, so it helps to go by the botanical name. This product is China Root, Smilax china (Ba Qia). It is different from Tu Fu Ling, which is Smilax glabra (also called glabrous greenbrier, and sometimes "chinaroot") - a different species that we sell separately. It is also different from Sarsaparilla, which in our catalog is Smilax medica, another Smilax species. And it is different again from Indian Sarsaparilla, which is not a Smilax at all but Hemidesmus indicus, a plant in a completely different family (Apocynaceae). Because "China Root," "chinaroot" and "sarsaparilla" have all been applied to more than one plant over the years, we label each of ours by botanical name and plant part so you can tell exactly which one you are getting.
