Frequently Asked Questions about China Root Extract
What is China Root / Ba Qia (Smilax china) rhizome extract?
China Root is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Smilax china, a climbing greenbrier of the family Smilacaceae, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Ba Qia. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-rhizome liquid extract carrying the rhizome's natural constituents, including flavonoids and steroidal saponins, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced from Thailand and each batch is gluten free. Please note the name "China Root" has historically been used loosely; this product is specifically Smilax china (Ba Qia), which is different from several similarly named Smilax and sarsaparilla products - see below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Smilax china rhizome; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
How is China Root different from Tu Fu Ling and sarsaparilla?
Several plants in the Smilax genus have overlapping common names, so it helps to go by the botanical name. This product is China Root, Smilax china (Ba Qia). It is different from Tu Fu Ling, which is Smilax glabra (also called glabrous greenbrier, and sometimes "chinaroot") - a different species that we sell separately. It is also different from Sarsaparilla, which in our catalog is Smilax medica, another Smilax species. And it is different again from Indian Sarsaparilla, which is not a Smilax at all but Hemidesmus indicus, a plant in a completely different family (Apocynaceae). Because "China Root," "chinaroot" and "sarsaparilla" have all been applied to more than one plant over the years, we label each of ours by botanical name and plant part so you can tell exactly which one you are getting. This page is Smilax china rhizome.
How do I use China Root / Ba Qia rhizome liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is China Root / Smilax china extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Smilax china (Ba Qia) is an officially recognized herb in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and is considered low in toxicity; Smilax species are used in teas and foods across Asia. However, human clinical data on concentrated extracts is limited, so keep to the suggested serving and use it short-term rather than continuously. As a general precaution with any concentrated extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
