Frequently Asked Questions about Chuan Bei Mu Extract
What is Chuan Bei Mu / Sichuan Fritillary (Fritillaria cirrhosa) bulb extract?
Chuan Bei Mu is a liquid extract of the dried bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa, a high-altitude plant of the lily family (Liliaceae) known as the Sichuan or tendrilleaf fritillary, and in traditional Chinese herbalism as Chuan Bei Mu - the premium, more expensive fritillary bulb. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-bulb liquid extract carrying the bulb's natural constituents, including isosteroidal alkaloids such as imperialine and verticine, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced; Fritillaria cirrhosa is a protected, at-risk alpine species, so sustainable/cultivated sourcing matters (see below). Please note this is Fritillaria cirrhosa (Chuan Bei Mu), a different species from Zhe Bei Mu (Fritillaria thunbergii), and please read the important safety notes below - especially the note about combining with other herbs.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Fritillaria cirrhosa bulb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is Chuan Bei Mu different from Zhe Bei Mu, and is it endangered?
Two points. First, the species: Chuan Bei Mu is Fritillaria cirrhosa, the Sichuan fritillary - the smaller, premium, more moistening bulb - while Zhe Bei Mu is Fritillaria thunbergii, the Zhejiang fritillary, a larger and stronger, more heat-clearing bulb. They are both "Bei Mu" cough-family herbs but different species used differently; we sell both, labeled by botanical name. Neither is the ornamental garden fritillary (like the crown imperial, Fritillaria imperialis). Second, conservation: wild Fritillaria cirrhosa is a protected, at-risk alpine Himalayan species that has been heavily over-collected from the wild, so it is important that the raw material be sustainably or cultivated-sourced rather than taken from wild populations - we source responsibly for this reason.
How do I use Chuan Bei Mu / fritillary bulb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, especially if you take other herbs or medication. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Chuan Bei Mu right for everyone? Safety information.
Chuan Bei Mu contains isosteroidal alkaloids (such as imperialine and verticine). The raw, unprocessed bulb is toxic; commercial material is normally processed, and at usual amounts the herb is well tolerated - but keep to the suggested serving, do not exceed it, and use it short-term rather than continuously. One traditional point is important: in classical Chinese herbalism, Bei Mu is one of the herbs that should NOT be combined with aconite-containing herbs (such as Chuan Wu, Cao Wu or Fu Zi) - part of the "eighteen incompatibilities" - and modern research supports this, since fritillary can increase the absorption of aconite's toxic compounds; so avoid using it alongside aconite formulas and tell your practitioner everything you are taking. Do NOT use during pregnancy or nursing, as its alkaloids may reach the baby. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
