Frequently Asked Questions about Cornflowers Extract
What is Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) flower extract?
Cornflower is a liquid extract of the dried flower of Centaurea cyanus, the bright blue bachelor button (also called bluebottle) of the Asteraceae (daisy) family. It is a slender annual with vivid blue edible flowers, and the petals have long been used as a colorful addition to tea blends, soups and as an edible garnish, and as a natural food coloring. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A couple of things are worth knowing: this is the edible blue cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), which is a different thing from corn or maize despite the name, and from other members of the daisy family such as knapweed and blessed thistle; and although the plant carries a charming old French nickname, Casse-lunettes (break-spectacles), from historical folk use, we make no health claims for it - please read the safety notes below and enjoy it as the colorful botanical it is.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Centaurea cyanus flower; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is cornflower the same as corn, or as other thistles?
No - the name causes some confusion, so it helps to be clear. Cornflower is Centaurea cyanus, the blue edible flower once common in grain (corn) fields, which is where the name comes from - it has nothing to do with corn or maize (Zea mays) or with corn flour. It is also different from the other members of its own genus and family: knapweeds and star thistles are other Centaurea species that are not used the same way, and blessed thistle is a separate plant, Cnicus benedictus (sometimes formerly placed in Centaurea). Cornflower is also known as bachelor button and bluebottle. We label ours clearly as cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), the flower, so it is not confused with corn, with the garden bachelor button seed sold for planting, or with the thistles of the daisy family.
How do I use Cornflower liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water or tea softens the flavor. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than the edible flower used in cooking. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Cornflower right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Cornflower is an edible flower with a very good safety record and is generally well tolerated, but a few cautions are sensible. Allergy: cornflower belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, so avoid it if you are allergic or sensitive to daisy-family plants such as ragweed, chamomile, dandelion, sunflower or marigold. Pregnancy and nursing: because a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Concentration: keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and stop if it does not agree with you. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
