California Poppy and Hawthorn Tincture
California Poppy and Hawthorn Tincture, California Poppy Aerial Parts, Hawthorn Leaf and FlowerCalifornia Poppy and Hawthorn Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the American West and the spring leaf and blossom of the European hawthorn. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - hawthorn interacts with heart medicines and California poppy causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.
- California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica aerial parts (Papaveraceae)
- Hawthorn, leaf and flower - Crataegus laevigata leaf and flower (Rosaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (California poppy from the USA, hawthorn from Chile). Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
- Hawthorn leaf and flower - the young leaves and clusters of white May blossom of a thorny hedgerow tree, gathered together in spring. The leaf and flower are a separate preparation from the red autumn berry, which we use in other blends.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, slightly floral taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and Hawthorn Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
