California Poppy and Hawthorn Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the American West and the spring leaf and blossom of the European hawthorn. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - hawthorn interacts with heart medicines and California poppy causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.

  • California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica aerial parts (Papaveraceae)
  • Hawthorn, leaf and flower - Crataegus laevigata leaf and flower (Rosaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (California poppy from the USA, hawthorn from Chile). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
  • Hawthorn leaf and flower - the young leaves and clusters of white May blossom of a thorny hedgerow tree, gathered together in spring. The leaf and flower are a separate preparation from the red autumn berry, which we use in other blends.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The two dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and Hawthorn Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

What is California Poppy and Hawthorn Alcohol-Free Drops?
This is a two-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: California poppy aerial parts (Eschscholzia californica) and hawthorn leaf and flower (Crataegus laevigata), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. California poppy is the orange wildflower of the American West, and hawthorn the thorny hedgerow tree of Europe, used here as the spring leaf and white blossom rather than the berry; each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - hawthorn interacts with heart medicines, and this blend causes drowsiness.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same two herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this hawthorn leaf and flower or hawthorn berry? Is California poppy related to the opium poppy?
This blend uses the hawthorn leaf and flower, gathered in spring; hawthorn berry is a separate preparation of the same tree, used in several of our other blends. California poppy belongs to the poppy family but to a different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum); it contains no opium and none of the opium alkaloids. Both herbs are also available as single extracts.
